Nobody Prepared Me for This

Real Talk Vol. 53

When I was younger, adulthood looked so fun.

Freedom.

Money.

Driving wherever you wanted.

Nobody telling you what to do.

I couldn’t wait.

Now…

Can somebody explain why toothpaste costs what it does?

Who approved these grocery prices?

And why does rent look like a mortgage payment?

Nobody prepared me for this.

Nobody told me adulthood would involve wondering what to make for dinner every single day.

Budgeting.

Scheduling appointments.

Comparing gas prices.

Checking your bank account before adding one more thing to your cart.

And don’t even get me started on the job market.

Whew.

Being grown is a full-time job by itself.

Some days it feels like you’re solving one problem just in time for another one to show up.

Pay the bill.

Refill the prescription.

Book the appointment.

Buy the groceries.

Repeat.

I used to think adults had everything figured out.

Now I realize they’re just doing their best like the rest of us.

And honestly?

That realization has been comforting.

Because nobody handed us a manual.

We’re all learning as we go.

Figuring out what works.

Adjusting when it doesn’t.

Trying to build a life we’re proud of while inflation keeps reminding us who’s really in charge.

Don’t get me wrong.

There are things I love about adulthood too.

I love making my own decisions.

Creating a home that feels like me.

Taking spontaneous trips.

Choosing how I spend my time.

Building a life that reflects who I’m becoming.

I just wish groceries would cooperate.

Looking back, I miss how simple life felt as a kid.

But I don’t miss having no say in my own life.

Every season comes with something.

As kids, we wanted freedom.

As adults, we realize freedom comes with responsibilities.

Turns out, they arrive together.

So if adulthood has been wearing you out lately…

You’re not behind.

You’re not failing.

You’re just doing what the rest of us are doing.

Taking it one bill, one grocery trip, and one deep breath at a time.

We got this.
