An Audience of One

Real Talk Vol. 49

Living alone has taught me more than I expected.

Not just about paying bills.

Or keeping a home.

Or remembering to buy toilet paper.

It taught me what peace feels like.

The kind that’s easy to overlook until you finally experience it.

I don’t have to ask what someone else wants for dinner.

I don’t have to clean up messes I didn’t make.

I don’t have to remind anyone to throw something away.

I don’t have to wonder why the toilet seat is up.

I don’t have to explain why I want a quiet evening.

I just…

live.

And there is something incredibly freeing about that.

My home reflects me.

My routines belong to me.

The silence isn’t awkward.

It’s peaceful.

Some nights I cook.

Some nights I order takeout.

Some nights dinner is cereal, and nobody has an opinion about it.

It’s such a small thing.

But those little moments add up.

Living alone has also taught me to enjoy my own company.

To sit with my thoughts.

To create routines I actually enjoy.

To build a life that feels like mine.

Not everyone wants to live alone.

And that’s okay.

This isn’t about saying it’s better.

It’s about saying it can be beautiful.

Because somewhere along the way, people started treating living alone like something to escape.

Like it was only a waiting room for the next chapter.

I don’t see it that way.

For me, it’s been a chapter worth appreciating.

One that’s taught me independence.

Confidence.

Responsibility.

And a deeper appreciation for peace.

If I share my home with someone again one day, I hope it’s because they add to that peace.

Not because I’m afraid to enjoy it by myself.

Until then…

I’ll happily enjoy the quiet.
